In thanksgiving for the life of Frederick J. Casley. On Wednesday 26th June the bells of St. Andrew’s, Wiveliscombe, rang for the funeral service of Frederick John Casley - “Fred” to his many friends. They rang "open” in Thanksgiving for his life which was one of service in so many spheres, in a nutshell those of his Family, his Church, his Job and his Tower. In all these areas he was faithful, reliable and always good natured. Certainly, as far as ringing was concerned, he was the ideal Sunday service ringer. He learnt to ring at Monken Hadley at the age of 13. His father had been a ringer at Barnet, where his father before him -Fred’s Grandfather-had been Captain of the ringers, but Fred was taught to ring at Hadley, Barnet bells being considered too heavy for the “young lad"! During his ringing career Fred had rung and called numerous quarters and his last peal was Grandsire Triples rung for the Patronal Festival of the Church in which his funeral service took place. In remembering Fred we cannot do better than apply to him the New Testament description of St. Barnabas, “he was a good man”. C.J.B.M.
