He was born in 1894, the son of Elizabeth Davey and employed at Tring Park Estate before enlisting in 1914 in the 6th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment where he was a drummer. Early in the battle on the Somme he was badly wounded and brought back to England. It was found impossible to remove a piece of shrapnel from his spine and he became hopelessly paralysed. The internment took place in Tring Cemetery. A firing party of the 5th Bedfords at Halton camp accorded full military honours and, with a detachment of drummers, received the remains as they were carried from the house to the Parish Church. Muffled bells were rung by his old comrades when his body was borne into the church. At the cemetery the Vicar said the committal sentences, and the volleys were fired, interspersed with the roll of the drum. The sounding of “The Last Post” by the buglers brought to a close a most impressive service. The whole band of ringers, of which the deceased was an enthusiastic member before going on active service, were among the mourners.
