At the time of the 1911, census he was working as a horseman on a farm. He rang his first peal, of Minor in 7 methods, at Goldhanger, on 11/10/1911, conducted by John D. Buckingham. Born: Goldhanger, Essex. Enlisted: Chelmsford, initially in the Essex Regiment, Service No.2763. Resided: Witham, Essex.

One of 11 children. Son of Walter Ottley (died 1918) and Emily Jane Ottley (née Turner) of Whitehorse Side, Navestock, Essex. He was at school at the time of the 1911 census. His name appears on the War Memorial at Navestock. His brother, Private Frederick Alma Ottley, Welsh Regiment, also a bellringer, died on 24/05/1917 and is buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Israel. Born: Navestock, Essex. Enlisted: Marylebone, Middx. Resided: Marylebone, Middx.
One of his brothers, Charles W. Ottley, was, during the 1960’s, Master of the London County Association, and is buried in the Churchyard at Bentley Common.

Rung half-muffled in memory of Arthur Haslen of this Parish, Corporal in the 12th Battalion the Suffolk Regiment who died of his wounds, aged 25, this day in 1918. He had enlisted with the Essex Regiment early in the war and been sent to France in May 1915. He was wounded in action in the summer of 1916 but recovered from his wounds and transferred to the Suffolk Regiment. He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial.

Commemorated at Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, Panel 5 and 6. Born 3rd quarter 1892. One of two brothers, son of William Henry Blake and Mary Blake of "Heatherbank", Lower Bourne, Farnham, Surrey and husband of Muriel Irene Blake (née Bown), whom he married in 1914, of 1 St Benet's Road, Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea. Father of Alan Henry Blake (born 02/11/1915).
At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as a secondary school teacher. He rang numerous peals in Surrey and continued peal ringing after he moved to Essex. He joined the Ancient Society of College Youths in 1912. His name is shown twice in the original 1924 Roll of Honour, as Blake, R, West Clandon and Blake, J A, Ilford.
Born: Merrow, Surrey. Enlisted: Unknown. Resided (1911 Census): Visiting the Philbrick family at 45 Glencoe Avenue, Seven Kings.

Born 02/01/1890. One of six children; four surviving at the 1911 census. Son of Sarah and the late Walter Nice of Gestingthorpe. Husband of Edith Nice (née Downs), whom he married on 14/04/1917 at Gestingthorpe. At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as a gas fitter. He rang a number of peals in his local area. He died at Dover Hospital from wounds received in action on 07/04/1918 near Arras, France. Born: Gestingthorpe, Essex. Enlisted: Sible Hedingham, Essex, initially in the Essex Regiment, on 11/02/1916. Resided: Gestingthorpe, Essex.

It is probable that he died of wounds received in the fighting in the spring of 1918 as he is buried at Fouquieres which was a Field Ambulance station. He is buried in the Fouquieres Churchyard Extension, Pas de Calais, France.

Rung in memory of Private George Henry Barrick, Great Dunmow, Essex. Died 11/06/1918 age 33. Labour Corps 170 Labour Coy. Service No.474633. Commemorated in the United Kingdom Book of Remembrance, kept at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Offices at Maidenhead, England. This Book commemorates United Kingdom casualties of the two World Wars who were not formerly recorded by the CWGC and the location of whose graves is not known. Born 1884. One of three boys; all surviving at the 1911 census. Son of Benjamin Barrick and Mary Ann Barrick (née Smith). Husband of Ada Frances Barrick (née Clarke), whom he married on 02/02/1914 at Great Dunmow, of Stanford-le-Hope, Essex. At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as a journeyman baker. He conducted the first peal rung at Great Dunmow, Plain Bob Minor, on 15/12/1909. He died at Orsett, Essex, but, as mentioned, the location of his grave is unknown at present. Born: Great Dunmow, Essex. Enlisted: Unknown. Resided (1911 Census): Church Street, Church End, Dunmow, Essex.

Rung half-muffled in memory of Charles Digby of this Parish who died on this day in 1918, aged 37. Charles served as a Second Lieutenant with the 123rd Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. He is buried at the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez. Though not remembered on the Felsted War Memorial, Charles Digby's name does appear on the Byfleet Memorial.
