This quarter was followed by an attempt at Bideford, which was stopped about half way as a result of drunken youths appearing on the stairs and trying to gain access to the top of the tower. It took several minutes of negotiation and a phone call to the police to persuade them to leave. The 91 year old local captain who met us was clearly upset by the invasion and although he offered us a chance to start again we had to leave as we had other towers booked. It is not possible to lock the bottom tower door from the inside at Bideford, so perhaps the moral of this sad tale is to take a wooden door wedge on such trips in future and, for the benefit of the emergency services (if required), we recommend churches keep a note of their postcode in the tower.
