Rung to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the peal at this tower of Bristol Surprise Maximus which was the third ever to be rung following peals at Leicester Cathedral in 1950 and 1951. The band wishes to associate with this peal Helen Diserens, Neville Diserens, Ron Diserens, John Hill and Roger Baldwin who with the conductor rang in the 1968 peal.

Rung in anticipation of the forthcoming centenary of the RAF on 1st April, as a tribute to the achievements of women in the WRAF and WAAF (including the conductor’s mother Doreen Merryweather) and as pilots in the ATA, including Mary Ellis, at 101 the last known surviving ATA pilot, and Molly Rose, who lived locally in Bampton for much of her life after the war.
As the crow flies, Black Bourton are the nearest ringable bells to RAF Brize Norton, the largest station of the Royal Air Force.
