Rung half-muffled to commemorate the death 100 years ago today of Pte. Ernest William Thompson, 10.3.1894-24.5.1915, the second Ryburgh man to die in the First World War. Pte. Thompson enlisted in September 1914; and joined the 1st Norfolks on May 1st 1915. He met his death after less than 1 month, “sniped through the brain, between Hooge and Ypres Canal at Hollebeke”.

In tribute to Nurse Edith Cavell, who was executed on 12 October 1915, this quarter was rung on St Luke's Day (the beloved physician) by 3 nurses, 1 general practitioner, 1 health care assistant and 1 dentist. These medical workers are all from Norfolk and wished to pay their respects to this brave Norfolk woman. Nurse Cavell trained at the London Hospital (now the Royal London), as did the ringer of 5.

Rung to mark the centenary of the death of Frank Noel Tuff sometime resident of Great Ryburgh. Noel Tuff was born in Rochester, Kent on the 26th of November 1889. He went to school in Beckenham and then attended Malvern College and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he studied law. He met and married a Great Ryburgh woman called Muriel Smith and then in June 1915 he joined the East Kent Yeomanry and was sent to the Dardanelles. He was involved and seriously injured in an explosion at Helles and later died in hospital, in Malta, on November 5th, 1915.
