With grateful thanks to Claire Elderkin who stood in at five minutes notice for Alex Addy who was unwell, and rang just her second quarter peal. This was a "First" for the West Lindsey District in the LDG's 125 Firsts project, being the first time that Claire has rung treble to all of the different callings of PB5 extents. Reg was responsible for the current ring of eight being hung at Welbourn. He financed the removal of the unringable eight at Hagworthingham Lincs when the tower there collapsed and paid for their restoration and rehanging here at Welbourn in 1978. The bells were diminished up to the start of the service today. Even though today was a celebration of his life, the family decided to have the bells half muffled using the new muffles Reg paid for only a few years ago. Reg was not only a benefactor to this Church, but was also a past Churchwarden. He was a businessman as well as having connections with various football clubs including being a former Chairman of ‘the Blades’ Sheffield United FC. Following the funeral Reg’s body was carried out through the ground floor ringing chamber exiting the Church through the west doors in the base of the tower, with the tenor bell being tolled, to be buried in the Churchyard. Following the burial the bells were rung as the congregation made their way over to the Village Hall. With thanks to Robert Harvey for joining us to ring afterwards. First quarter on eight for over 15 years: 1. Rung also remembering Harold F Gibson of Lincoln, who died 28th February 2025 aged 95. Harold rang the treble to the first peal on the bells here in their new home, being Stedman Triples on 17th June 1978. 'Ring out the Old, Ring in the New' - It is thought that the Hagworthingham bells, now at Welbourn, are the actual Wild Bells which inspired Tennyson to write the poem when he lived within earshot of them at Somersby as a young boy.
