Rung in fond memory of Fran Brealey, on the bells she loved, who sadly passed away unexpectedly on 20th December 2021.
This quarter was rung half muffled at the request of the family immediately prior to the private family funeral held for Fran here in her beloved Church. All the ringers have connections to ringing at Welbourn and knew Fran. The bells were diminished up to the start of the service.
Fran and her husband Reg are responsible for the current ring of eight being hung at Welbourn. They financed the removal of the unringable eight at Hagworthingham Lincs when the tower there collapsed and paid for their restoration and rehanging here at Welbourn in 1978.
Fran was a good friend to ringers and you were always guaranteed of a warm welcome when ever you came to ring at Welbourn. The bells were always available if nothing was taking place in Church and Fran would always try to make the effort to be present in person to greet visiting ringers.
Fran was highly respected by all in the local community and was also a long standing Churchwarden here at Welbourn. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but her memory will live on each time her beloved bells peal out over the village.
The band wish to associate the following ringers with this quarter and we are sure there are many others too – Sue Waterfall, Gill Gladman, Betty Stracey, Sandra & John Underwood, Margaret Parker, Judy Williamson, Les Townsend, Philip & Fiona Dawson.
The following seems fitting for Fran, taken from Tennyson’s poem ‘In Memoriam, Ring Out Wild Bells’
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
(It it is thought that the Hagworthingham bells - now at Welbourn, are the actual Wild Bells which inspired Tennyson to write the poem when he lived within earshot of them at Somersby as a young boy).
Rest in peace dear friend.

Also present Philip R Wild.
Rung in fond memory of Fran Brealey, on the bells she loved. Fran exited the Church through the ground floor belfry and out the great west doors to her final resting place in the Churchyard within the shadow of the tower.
Rung half muffled immediately after the burial had taken place out in the Churchyard as the family departed.
Fran and her husband Reg are responsible for the current ring of eight being hung at Welbourn. They financed the removal of the unringable eight at Hagworthingham Lincs when the tower there collapsed and paid for their restoration and rehanging here at Welbourn in 1978.

Specially arranged and rung half muffled in fond memory of Fran Brealey, on the bells she loved, who passed away 20th December 2021. Fran was a long standing Churchwarden here at Welbourn.

Rung in fond memory of Fran Brealey, on the bells she loved, prior to her Memorial Service in the Church she loved, to celebrate a wonderful lady and her life which touch so many lives.
Fran was a long standing Churchwarden here and was at the heart of this community. She was a good friend to all ringers who came to Welbourn to ring the bells.
She will be greatly missed, especially her warm smile! RIP dear friend.
‘Well done thou good and faithful servant’
The band wish to associate the following ringers with this quarter and we are sure there are many others too – Sue Waterfall, Gill Gladman, Betty Stracey, Sandra & John Underwood, Margaret Parker, Judy Williamson, Les Townsend, Fiona Dawson & Philip Mason.

On 29th April 1982 V-force Vulcan Bombers - XM598, XM607 and XM597 took off from RAF Waddington overloaded with fuel, bombs and an extra crew member. Flying in radio silence they met up with their five Victor in air refueling tankers. Having refueled XM598 and XM607 continued to Ascension Island landing after a nine hour flight. The following night XM607 with its attending Victor tankers successfully completed the BLACK BUCK 1 raid on Port Stanley Airfield on the Falklands - dropping 21 - 1000lb bombs on the airfield. Arriving back at Ascencion Island after a flight of over 6600 nautical miles and over 14 hours flying time - this was the longest bombing mission in history. XM607 took part in 3 of the 5 completed BLACK BUCK raids, and now in retirement proudly stands as gate guardian at RAF Waddington

Specially arranged and rung with the bells half muffled in fond memory of our dear friend Ron Applewhite, who passed away four months after his 100th birthday on 22nd May 2020.
This is the first opportunity we have had to ring a peal in memory of him and to celebrate his life due to covid preventing us at the time of hos death, last year’s peal which would have been on the first anniversary was cancelled on the morning of the attempt as the conductor was rushed into hospital so we have had to wait until now.
Ron’s obituary:
Ron was born in neighbouring Washingborough but he lived in Potterhanworth most of his married life moving to the village after the second world war and lived here with his dear wife Molly ever since until he had to give up driving at the age of 94 and moved to a sheltered complex in neighbouring Branston where he lived independently for the next for years before finally moving into a care home at neighbouring Heighington for the last couple of years of his life. So he has lived in this group of villages nearly all his life – all within a couple of miles of each other, so this was very much home.
Both he and his wife Molly were stalwarts of this village sitting on many of the village organising committees.
Ron learnt to ring aged 12 at Washingborough. After he moved to Potterhanworth after the second world war he joined the Nocton band and then got invited to join the locally renowned Branston band. He rang with the Branston band for the next 20 years during the 1950’s & 1960’s. he was a member of the Branston Multi Minor Peal band which was highly regarded in the county as the best Minor band during the 50’s & 60’s. They were known for the striking in particular as well as the complexity of the Minor methods and numbers they rang.
Ron was also actively involved in the Potterhanworth Millennium project to restore the three bells and augment them to six. Not only did he help and support at all the fundraising events from 2000 to 2004 he also helped with the actual bell work. He was over joyed on dedication day (4th Sept 2004) when a life long dream of his had come to fruition – Potterhanworth now had a ring of six bells!
Shortly after the dedication his dearly beloved wife Molly passed away (Oct 2004) after being married for over 50 years and so Ron donated a set of muffles to the Church in memory of her. These are the very muffles that we used today for the peal.
Ron rang quarter peals here on his 90th, 91st & 92nd birthday's and he was very proud of these especially the one on his 90th birthday when he rang inside to Single Oxford Minor and the one on his 92nd birthday which was his last quarter when he rang Plain Bob Minor inside.
Ron was made an Honorary Life Member of the Guild in 2004 for services to ringing within the Diocese, something he was extremely proud of.
We were pleased to be able to celebrate with Ron at his care home on his 100th birthday (26th Jan 2020) as covid had not hit us then so we have some very fond memories of that day and he was so pleased to see us all and to hear about the peals and quarters we had rung for his 100th birthday.
Rest in peace dear friend now reunited with his beloved wife Molly, both of whom are interred in this Church yard within the shadow of this tower (so under the sound of his beloved bells).

Rung half muffled in memory of Canon Rhys Prosser at the same time as his funeral was taking place at Bexhill on Sea, St Peter's. Rhys was a Canon of Lincoln Cathedral, Rural Dean and vicar of the Saxilby and Stow groups of parishes. He was a past President of the West Lindsey Branch, a member of the Lincoln Guild's Roll of Honour and good friend to very many. In addition to his love of ringing, he was a steam train and Welsh rugby enthusiast. Our thoughts are with his wife, Steph, and their family.

This peal was rung after the Flag Raising Ceremony which saw the first flag flown from the new Jubilee Flagpole which has been erected especially for the Platinum Jubilee on top of the Church Tower, this event being the start of the Village's Weekend of Celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee. Approx 160 villagers came out for the Flag Raising and to listen to the ringing afterwards.
