This is the final ringing on the bells before they are removed from the tower next week and put into storage pending a new project to rehang them in the City. The last ringing on the bells took place on Whitsunday, 20th May 2018, when a quarter peal was rung prior to the final Anglican service being held in the Church before it closed and the Parish and Congregation was merged with neighbouring St Peter-at-Gowts. Also marking the 300th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone (20th March 1721) for the current Church which was rebuilt between 1721 & 1723 after the previous church was badly damaged during the civil war. Prior to the civil war St Botolph’s Church was second in size and status to the Cathedral. The current fifth is the only bell which survives from the ring of five bells cast for the newly rebuilt Church in 1723 by Richard Phelps of Whitechapel which were installed when the new Church opened in 1723. 45th peal to be rung on the bells in this tower, although the first peal in 1912 was rung on the previous five old bells, the tenor of which has been retained as the current fifth. With thanks to the Keltek Trust for there help and support, and wishing the Greek Orthodox all the best in their new home as they take ownership of St Botolph’s – now St Basil the Great & St Paisios of the Holy Mountain. Rung from the ground floor porch area so that we could ring with the main double doors fully open to provide plenty of ventilation. With thanks to Yvonne Woodcock & Robert Harvey for manning the door and dealing with the public. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKdXWs7YiA0 Rung also in memory of Geoffrey F Bryant M.B.E. of Barton-upon-Humber who sadly passed away last month and whose memorial service took place yesterday. The band wish to associate Chris Turner (Guild Master) & Graham Colborne (Central Branch Master) with this peal, both unable to ring due to being away. We originally intended to ring 7 methods, but due to the go of the bells (having not been rung for 3 years and being hung on plain bearings) to reduce this to 3 methods instead, however once we started ringing the decision was made early on to change into Plain Bob and score the peal, having to deal not only with the go of the bells but also the distractions from outside ringing with the west doors fully open directly onto the busy High Street. The removal of the bells begins tomorrow and the intention is they will be rehung in the City in the near future. St Botolph’s held its last Anglican service on Whitsunday, 20th May 2018, before closing its doors and being passed over to the Greek Orthodox. This marks the end of a Church being dedicated to St Botolph standing here on this site, since at least the 11th century, on the edge of the Cities southern boundary by the Great Bargate. Rung by some of the former local band, one final time, marking the long life and ministry of St Botolph’s and wishing the Greek Orthodox all the best in their new home as they take formal ownership of St Botolph’s – now St Basil the Great & St Paisios of the Holy Mountain. Remembering Canon Charles E. Cooper M.A. Vicar of St Botolph’s 1911-1916, the driving force behind having the old five bells recast and augmented to six in 1913 by John Taylor & Co, resulting in the fine peal of bells we have today. Grandsire Doubles was chosen for this final ring as the first peal on the bells was Grandsire Doubles rung on 26th Dec 1912. Rung from the ground floor porch area so that we could ring with the main double doors fully open to provide plenty of ventilation. Also present was Sue Waterfall who rang the third down in peal, the final lower on the bells. ‘RING OUT THE OLD, RING IN THE NEW’ Lincoln Diocesan Guild Fishtoft, Lincolnshire St Guthlac Friday, 25 June 2021 in 26m (12–2–9 in F♯) 720 Cambridge Surprise Minor Rung Half Muffled 1 Alan D H Bird 2 Sylvia M Taylor 3 Joanne French 4 Luke Tobin 5 Anthony D Walker 6 Greg Harrison (C) Rung in memory of Cindy West.
