Specially arranged and rung to celebrate the 100th birthday yesterday of Ron Applewhite (26th Jan).
CONGRATULATIONS RON & MANY HAPPY RETURNS!!!
Ron has close connections to this village. He was married here at St Andrew’s and lived most of his life in the village. He was a valued and loyal member of the local band and was a great support when the bells here were rehung and augmented in 2004.
Ron was made an Honorary Life member of the Lincoln Diocesan Guild in 2004 for his services to bell ringing in the Diocese, something he was very proud of.
He was also very proud to have rung quarter peals here on his 90th, 91st & 92nd Birthday’s and although the one for his 92nd turned out to be his last quarter peal he was still ringing with us at Potterhanworth & Branston on Sunday’s until he was 96 and even after that still takes a great interested in what ringing we were doing.
Methods specially chosen and the 1920 changes of Grandsire chosen to represent the year in which Ron was born.
250th peal together: 2 & 6.
50th peal together: 4 & 6.
200th peal: 4.
25th peal on the bells: 2.
The band wish to name the second method:

Specially arranged and rung to celebrate the 100th birthday of Ron Applewhite (26th Jan) & also to mark the 70th anniversary of Ron’s first peal (11th Feb 1950).
CONGRATULATIONS RON & MANY HAPPY RETURNS!!!
Ron has close connections to this tower. He was a member of the well known and highly respected Branston Surprise Minor Peal Band during the 1950’s & 60’s ringing many peals of multi Minor here on these bells and at various other 6 bells towers all over the county. Ron's first peal was here at Branston on 11th Feb 1950 & his last peal was also here on 25th Mar 1967, with Branston being his leading peal tower with a total of 22 peals.
Today’s peal replicates Ron’s first peal using the same 6 methods he rang here 70 years ago in a few weeks time.
Ron was made an Honorary Life member of the Lincoln Diocesan Guild in 2004 for his services to bell ringing in the Diocese, something he was very proud of.
Ron did a lot for the conductor in his early years, transporting him around towers & practices, helping and encouraging him with his method ringing. He also rang in the conductor’s first quarter peal which has here at Branston in 1999.

Tapped on handbells in memory of RICHARD SHORT, Tower Captain at Ruskington, who sadly passed away last Thursday (11th June).
Richard will be greatly missed, especially his smile, he was always a cheerful person with a dry sense of humour. Yvonne Woodcock wishes to be associated with this quarter. Both myself & Yvonne have happy memories of regularly attending the Wednesday night Practices at Ruskington run by Richard in his usual laid back cheerful manner, and in recent years his attendance and support at the Caythorpe Practice Nights! Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

It's been 4 months since ringing ceased
And towers only offered peace.
It wasn't bad right at the start,
Perhaps a flicker of the heart.
But as the weeks turned into months
I must confess, I've got the "hump"!
'How apt!' a non-ringer would say
'Like Quasimodo in every way!'
However, desperate though I am
I draw the line at tolling clangs!
I miss the people, miss Plain Bob
No wait, I mean I'd miss the bob!
I miss the complex, wandering lines,
I miss the forlorn learner's whines.
I miss the sound of rope guide's clatter,
I do not miss observer's chatter!
Sad days these are, in many ways,
At times like these bells lead the way
To ring in sorrow, ring for glory
For those who have complete life's story.
Fear not, I hope, it won't be long
Before once more we make bell song!
Backdate it all, go plan some peals,
But first ring rounds to get a feel!
Plan a day of awesome quarters
Or if you fancy something shorter,
Call changes, plain hunt, Kings and Queens
We'll make the sound that reigns supreme!

Aubrey sadly passed away last month in Weston-Super-Mare. Aubrey rang his most recent quarter-peal at Butterwick on October 14th 2014 with a genuinely local band:

Tolling on Armistice Day at request of churchwarden. 5 minutes tolling until 1100hrs. The two minute silence being broken at 1102hrs by 102 blows tolling.
To remember all those lost in conflict, and also the 100th anniversary of The Cenotaph and the internment of the Unknown Soldier at Westminster Abbey.
FROM THE BBC ARCHIVE
"On the morning of 11 November 1920 - two years to the day after the war had ended, the body of the unknown warrior was drawn in a procession through London to the Cenotaph. This new war memorial on Whitehall was then unveiled by George V.
At 1100 there was a two-minute silence, and the body was then taken to nearby Westminster Abbey where it was buried, passing through a guard of honour of 100 holders of the Victoria Cross."
