Charles was flying in one of the 510 aircraft on a bombing mission of Hamburg. Debris from Charles' plane took down another Lancaster. 29 planes failed to return from this mission. This was Charles' 47th mission. This quarter peal was planned to take place in Helpringham Church, however this was not possible due to the installation of new heating system work overrunning and scaffolding still being in place. Helpringham is the church Charles attended as he grew up, and there are several items there in memory of his life, and his name is recorded in the role of honour. Charles was uncle to Alan ringer of the 4th.
