The date was chosen because on this day in 1536 a sermon was preached in St James church Louth expressing concern with the contents of the 10 Articles of Religion recently imposed by Henry VIII. It was also rumoured that the King intended to close all churches less than 7 miles apart and valuables including bells sold to provide funds for the King's treasury. The next day the Lincolnshire Rising erupted - an event which caused the King so much concern that he referred to the rebels as 'the commons of a brute and beastly shire'. Welbourn bells are appropriate as these are the 'wild bells' referred to by Tennyson in his epic poem 'In Memoriam'. At the time the poem was written the eight bells were at Hagworthingham.
