MILLENNIUM RINGING

The three bells at this Church rang as part of the national ringing to celebrate the new Millennium, with Church bells all over the country ringing at 12 noon.

‘Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow,

The year is going, let him go, Ring out the false, ring in the true.’

Notes: First major ringing event for C. Stafford, having been taught to ring by F. Derry (Grandfather).

Rung to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first peal of maximus rung on the Cathedral bells and the first peal of maximus for the Lincoln Diocesan Guild which was Cambridge Surprise Maximus rung on 28th December 1929.

First quarter on 12 for 3, First quarter of maximus for 3 & 7.

Rung as a Birthday Compliment to the Conductor on his 50th Birthday.

Rung to congratulate Dame Ellen MacArthur on achieving the fastest single-handed, non-stop sailing circumnavigation of the world.

Rung half muffled in loving memory of Charles Thomas ‘Tom’ Rodgers, Father to Yvonne on the 2nd, Grandfather to Christopher on the treble, Uncle to Richard on the tenor, who sadly passed away on 13th November 2000 at the age of 87.

Tom was married here at St. Helen’s in 1945 to Kathleen and has lived in the village ever since. He was a former Churchwarden here at St Helen’s and served on the PCC for over 40 years. He also learned to ring here at St Helen's and was one of the driving forces behind getting the bells rehung on ball bearings back in 1957. He rang in the first quarter peal and first peal on the bells by a Sunday Service band following the rehanging and reestablishment of a local band. He was a long standing member of the congregation and a loyal supporter of the Church and the village as a whole, sitting on many of the village committees.
