Rung for national 'Ring Out for Peace on the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings' commemoration. A particularly poignant event for Angela Elliott as her father, Gerald Lawrence Reginald Mumby, took part. She writes: 'Eighty years after D-Day we came together to commemorate the great sacrifice made by thousands of young men landing on the Normandy beaches on 6th June 1944, who died, and to celebrate the lives of those, like my father, who returned home, by ringing my first quarter peal on an inside bell to Plain Bob Doubles. My father died in 2015, having reached the age of 90. Three weeks before his death France honoured him with the Legion D’Honneur for his part in the D-Day landings. He always said he didn’t do much. This was far from the truth. At three weeks short of 19, he was sent on secondment with the Dorset Regiment as a telegraphist/radio operator (he was actually in the Navy, but the Dorset's had run out of radio operators) to land on Gold Beach in the first wave of British troops. Making their way through the dead and dying, under mortar attack and sniper fire, and risking life and limb through the mines, he made his way into the dunes to dig in and act as a spotter for ship to shore forward bombardment. All in all he spent three weeks in France, complained about not changing his socks, worried for the French who had undergone severe deprivations and maltreatment by the enemy, and terrified out of his mind. When he returned to the UK he had a week’s leave before he was sent to Singapore for the Japanese surrender. My brother, Robert Mumby (a non-ringer) was kind enough to bring Dad’s medals, including the Legion D’Honneur, to the tower today, so we could ring both for D-Day and also in my Dad’s memory - Gerald Lawrence Reginald Mumby 14th July 1925 – 23rd October 2015'. To mark this anniversary a special commemorative service took place at St Botolph's Church, Bishopsgate in the City of London on Wednesday 18th September at 1.10pm. The service consisted of two voluntaries for organ which Gustav composed between 1890 and 1891. One was played at the beginning of the service and the other was played at the very end. We also had two hymns by Gustav as well as two sections from the mass by Imogen Holst, Gustav's only daughter.
