Frederick William Merritt. Frederick enlisted on 5th May 1917 declaring his age as 18 however, he was actually 17. He was posted to the 9th Training Reserve Battalion at Rugeley, Staffordshire. He was transferred to the West Riding Regiment on 1st December and thence to the Durham Light Infantry Service No. 81957. Frederick was posted to France and reported missing on 27th May 1918 during the run-up to the Third Battle of the Aisne. This date was accepted as his date of death. It was George Attree’s initiative that the SCACR was proposed in 1884 and founded in 1885. He was its first Secretary and when the office was created in 1893, its first Master. He was also concerned in the formation of the CCCBR upon which he served. For many years he was Churchwarden at St. Peter, Brighton and with the St. Peter’s Society rang numerous peals there, as well as at other places in Sussex including Burgess Hill. 50th together: 6 and 7.
