Tom and Jackie Barlow wish to be associated with this quarter. Tom taught Angie to ring in 1970, which ultimately led to the whole family, including Mavis and her husband Ron, learning to ring.

Dedicated to the memory of Ken Knight, died 18/12/17, a former member of the Cathedral band and a good friend to all who knew him.

Bells were rung open in the memory of Kenneth C. Knight, former Tower Captain at Burgess Hill 1958-65. It was in 1958 after the bells here had gone silent for a number of years that a request was made by the Incumbent and remaining band members at St. John, that Ken along with his wife Stella undertook to train and reform a new Burgess Hill Band. Thank you, Ken, for your help and support in reforming the band. 2018 is our Diamond Jubilee Year since that reformation. Rest in Peace.

On January 10th 1918, with the bells half muffled three six scores of Grandsire Doubles were rung in memory of George Kenner Hawkins, by the Crawley Band. This evening, January 10th 2018, the Crawley Sunday Service Band, again, with the bells half muffled, rang three extents of Grandsire Doubles in memory of Corporal Hawkins who died of wounds 100 years ago today. He is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France.

Dedicated to the memory of Anne Daughtry, a member of the Walberton band, and Ken Knight of Aldingbourne, who regularly helped out on our practice night.

David Wiseman who enlisted in the Royal Fusilliers Regiment, Service No. Ps/6177, and later transferred to the “Z” Company, 4th Battalion, Royal Fusilliers, Service no. G/55230. David died on 21st March 1918 aged 36 and is commemorated in the Wancourt British Cemetry, Pas de Calais, France. He was awarded the Victory and British medals.

George Barclay Knight who enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regiment No. 1819, he then moved to the 1st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Motors) No. 253. George died on 23rd March 1918, aged 19, his name is on the Pozieres Memorial. George was awarded the Military Service Medal.

Alfred Prince Jeal who enlisted in Horsham into the Royal Sussex Regiment No. 4670 on 19th February 1918 when he was 16 years 9 months but on his military forms his age has been crossed out and declared as 18 years 6 months. He was killed in France on 13th April 1918 at Bouzincourt near the town of Albert. He died aged 18 having completed (according to his military record) 2 years’ service.

Rung in memory and on the centenary of the death of Lieut. Bernard William Skipworth, M.C.

Bernard enlisted as a Private in the 18th Royal Fusiliers and was serving by January 1915. He became a Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment 3rd Battalion, which was attached to the 9th Battalion MG Corps (Infantry). He fought in France from 25th June 1916 and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery. He was also awarded the Victory and British Medals. Bernard died on 25th April 1918 and is remember on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium, Panel 86-88.

Rung to celebrate the Diamond Wedding of George Francis to Vivian Mason, and Anne Mason to Douglas Booker in a double wedding ceremony 10th May 1958.

Rung in memory and on the centenary of the death of Charles Malcolm Cummings (known as “Malcolm”). Malcolm went to France in October 1914, taking his own car. He was a civilian, a member of the Church Army, and he was a chauffeur for the British Red Cross, working for the Motor Ambulance Department. He was attached to a Clearing Hospital at the Front. Malcolm died, aged 30 on 8th May 1918 from an illness contracted in France. He was awarded the British medal
