Knight, former Tower Captain at Burgess Hill 1958-65. It was in 1958 after the bells here had gone silent for a number of years that a request was made by the Incumbent and remaining band members at St. John, that Ken along with his wife Stella undertook to train and reform a new Burgess Hill Band. Thank you, Ken, for your help and support in reforming the band. 2018 is our Diamond Jubilee Year since that reformation. Rest in Peace. This evening, January 10th 2018, the Crawley Sunday Service Band, again, with the bells half muffled, rang three extents of Grandsire Doubles in memory of Corporal Hawkins who died of wounds 100 years ago today. He is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France. He was killed in France on 13th April 1918 at Bouzincourt near the town of Albert. He died aged 18 having completed (according to his military record) 2 years’ service. Bernard William Skipworth, M.C. Bernard enlisted as a Private in the 18th Royal Fusiliers and was serving by January 1915. He became a Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment 3rd Battalion, which was attached to the 9th Battalion MG Corps (Infantry). He fought in France from 25th June 1916 and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery. He was also awarded the Victory and British Medals. Bernard died on 25th April 1918 and is remember on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium, Panel 86-88. Malcolm went to France in October 1914, taking his own car. He was a civilian, a member of the Church Army, and he was a chauffeur for the British Red Cross, working for the Motor Ambulance Department. He was attached to a Clearing Hospital at the Front. Malcolm died, aged 30 on 8th May 1918 from an illness contracted in France.
