In memory of Corporal Leonard Startup, died 03/05/1917, aged 26, Northumberland Fusiliers 1st Bn. Service No. C/22823
Commemorated at Arras Memorial, France, Bay 2 and 3
Parents lived at 2 Heath Cottages, Tonbridge Road. He was one of the large family (8 children) of a general labourer, James Startup, and his wife Eliza. Their eldest son was just getting too old for active service when the war came, but Leonard was the youngest and there was a series of sisters inbetween. Leonard must have had a good recommendation from someone possibly even the vicar of St Michael's, because by 1911 he became one of 24 indoor servants ( the youngest indoor servant, the hall boy to be exact) at Linton Park, in the household of Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis. We don't know if he remained there and how he managed to be a Bellringer as well as a hall-boy if he did, but he took himself off to Guildford and enlisted . Killed in the Allied offensive at Arras aged 26
No known grave on the Arras Memorial to the Missing along with 34000 others
