Rung to honour and remember William Hale of Painswick; for too long forgotten. William Hale rang here for 42 years from 1880 until he left his home village in 1922. During that time, he was the driving force behind the resurrection of ringing at Painswick after a long period of decline. He taught himself change-ringing and then recruited, taught, organised, inspired, promoted and led the ringing at Painswick; this included restoring the tower's reputation for long-length peal ringing. It was his dogged persistence that eventually led to Painswick bells being re-hung, and he can be considered the saviour of the Rudhall 10 by stubbornly refusing to have these bells re-tuned. Hale was also Hon Secretary for 30 years, setting the standards for all Stroud Branch officers to follow decades into the future.
