Thomas was born at Eastcombe near Bisley and worked as a carpenter on the nearby Lypiatt Park Estate whilst being an active member of the village community, connected with the Reading Room, Church Choir, Bisley Choral Society, the Cricket Club and the Primrose League. Also to commemorate the death on 3 January 1916 of Private William Blackwell, 7th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment who was killed in action at Gallipoli. William was the eldest son of William & Mary Blackwell of Mount Pleasant Bisley and he was their second son to be killed in the Great War.
