Rung after a minute's silence in memory of Able Seaman Robert Underwood, Royal Naval Division, Hawke Battalion, RNVR on the day of the 100th Anniversary of his death in France from the effects of gas poisoning. Robert was a bellringer at St John’s and is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. “Waiting in a holy stillness wrapt in sleep”

Rung half-muffled for the Passion of Christ, and in remembrance of Pte George Bradford from Orton who died of his wounds on 30.3.1918 and is buried in Cologne South Military Cememtery. Family members living still in the village listened to the ringing.

The Fifty were the first of the August 1914 volunteers from the Coalville area who joined up and went to France to fight on the Western Front. On October 30th 1914, they marched from St John the Baptist Church in Hugglescote to the train station in Coalville, with thousands lining the streets to wave them off. Twenty eight of them would not return home.
