He was killed by a German sniper in a battle for a small copse on the Somme on 14 July 1916, aged 36. His name appears on the Thiepval Memorial, a shrine in France to the 72,000-plus missing British and South African men who died in the Battles of the Somme between 1915 and 1918 who have no known grave.
