George was reported as missing in action on 1 October 1916, and later presumed to have died that day. His name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial, which lists the names of over 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave (Pier and Face 9 D 9 C 13 C and 12 C).
