In memory of Second Lieutenant Henry (Harry) Brodie Day, Melbourn, Ely Diocesan. Died 03/02/1918 age 20. Cambridgeshire Regiment "C" Coy. 1st Bn. Commemorated at Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, France, Grave IV A 22. Born 12/03/1897. One of five children; all surviving at the 1911 census. Son of Charles Day and Mary Elizabeth Day (née Lilley) of Greenhill Farm, Melbourn, Cambs. He worked as an assistant schoolmaster in Melbourn before enlisting. On enlisting, he initially joined the Suffolk Regiment as a Private, Service No.201273, and was later promoted to Lance Corporal and, while an Acting Serjeant, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 30/10/1917. He joined the Cambridgeshire Regiment on 03/01/1918. Exactly one month later, he was killed in action by shellfire. He is remembered on a large stained-glass window in the South transept of Melbourn church. Born: Melbourn, Cambs. Enlisted: Meldreth, Cambs on 11/12/1915. Resided (1911 Census): Roseleigh, Mortlock Street, Melbourn, Cambs.

He is buried at the Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia. He was the son of Charles T. Coles of Walthamstow. His Nephew, John Coles, listened to the last 20 minutes of this peal and joined the band afterwards.

He was the fourth of four Molesworth villagers to be killed in the Great War.
We will remember them.
Also remembering the conductor’s cousin John William Baker, aged 80 years, and his ‘best man’ Robert (Bob) Knights, aged 68 years, who both died on 24th May 2018.
