Rung in Memory of Carpenter Fredrick Charles McCarthy of Stranton Hartlepool died 01/01/1919 age 33. A member of the Mercantile Marine Reserve, H.M. Yacht Iolaire. Commemorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial, England, Panel 32. The sinking of the H.M. Yacht Iolaire is a tragic story. She was bringing home seamen, who had fought in and survived the Great War, and left the port of Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland late on the evening of 31/12/1918. At 2.30am on New Year's Day, as the ship approached the port of Stornoway, a few yards offshore and a mile away from the safety of Stornoway Harbour, she hit the infamous rocks known as "The Beasts of Holm" and sank. The death toll was officially put at 205, of whom 181 men were islanders, but as the ship was badly overcrowded and there was a lack of proper records, the toll may have been slightly higher. Only 75 of the 280 officially known passengers survived the disaster. See RW No. 5617/8 page 1279.

Bells 2 (Andy James/Jill Barron), 3 (Niki Springford/Rachel L. Bean) and 4 (Alex Jackson/Claire L. Bean) were each rung by two different ringers for rounds during the 7 mins of tolling to enable more of our ringers to take part, as it was possible to swap over during a standing period. There were rounds for two whole pulls, then bells 1 to 5 stood while the tenor tolled for two whole pulls before bells 1 to 5 joined in again for two whole pulls of rounds. This continued for the 7 minutes, finishing with rounds on all the bells and sounded very effective for the occasion.
