On this day one hundred years ago a bellringer from this tower was killed in action. We rang to celebrate his life and the ultimate sacrifice he made. Private William Brantford Webster. William, born in West Hartlepool in 1896, was the son of Albert and Mary Webster of Brantford Cottage, West Hartlepool. One of five children, William worked for a short time as a clerk prior to enlisting. In 1914 aged 15 he rang his first peal at Stranton, 5088 Kent TB Major, along with his father. He served with 9th Battalion Cheshire Regiment and his service number was 45299. William is buried in Marfaux Cemetary, France, the inscription on his grave reading "we loved him".
