Rung by friends from Rothbury and Morpeth bands following the funeral of All Saints' Rothbury ringer Janice Henney, who died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday 8th April 2016. Open ringing before the funeral was undertaken by both locals and ringers from other northeast towers including Hexham Abbey and Newcastle Cathedral. The service was taken by lapsed Morpeth Clock Tower ringer Rev Dr Rosie Stacy who is a priest in the Upper Coquetdale Parish.

Announcing to the people of Newcastle upon Tyne the 100th. anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme where many brave men died from 7-30 a.m. when the whistles were blown to go over the tops of the trenches.

Today, 1st.July 2016, the bells of this Cathedral Church were rung to remember the fallen from many countries that died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme one hundred years ago.

In particular we remember three bell ringers from the local ringing association that died on this day.

Rung half-muffled to commemorate the life of Lieutenant Robert Whitfield Falconer, ringer at this tower, who died on 1 July 1916, and all those who died on the first day of The Somme. He made provision in his will for two new bells to be added to augment this ring to ten. Rung as part of Ringing to Remember, the D&N First World War Ringing Commemoration.

Rung half muffled in remembrance of Major James Leadbitter Knott, 1883-1916. Killed on the morning of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He and his brother Basil gave their name to the dedication of this church. Without their tragic loss, this church would not stand. Their names are inscribed on the tenor bell. "We ring in memory of James and Basil Knott. God knows"

On this day one hundred years ago a bellringer from All Saints Church, Rothbury was killed. We ring to celebrate his life and the ultimate sacrifice that he made.

Captain Thomas Murray

Only son of John and Isabella E. Murray of Church Street, Rothbury. Husband to Dora Murray of 1, Woodfield Road, Tonbridge, Kent. Aged 31. Enlisted and gazetted in September 1914, promoted Captain in December 1914 and served in 11th. Battalion Cheshire Regiment. His name is on the Thiepval Memorial, pier and face 3C and 4A

His name is recorded on the ringers plaque in this Cathedral.

Died aged 27, on the 24th July 1916 of wounds received on the 3rd July. He was with the 13th. Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. Buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen. Grave Officers A.4. 10.

His name is recorded on the ringer’s plaque in this Cathedral.

Rung a week before the wedding of Gill Enzor and Duncan Wakeling. Also to welcome Arlo Thomas Edward Enzor, grandson of 3, born 18.7.16. The most number of Enzors in a quarter peal.
