Died 17/10/1918 age 31. The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment "C" Coy. 1st Bn. Service No.32349. Commemorated at Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France, Grave IV D 16. Born 4th quarter 1886 and baptised 26/12/1886 at Leyland. One of ten children; nine surviving at the 1911 census. Son of Richard Crook and Mary Crook (née Bowling) of 36 Union Street, Leyland. Before enlisting, he was employed at the Leyland & Birmingham Rubber Company Ltd in Leyland. He played for the local Leyland Cricket Club, keeping wicket for them. A memorial service was held in Leyland Parish church on 21/11/1918, for three men, including Corporal Crook. His brother, Thomas Crook, was also a ringer at Leyland. Born 16/11/1898 and baptised 18/12/1898 at St Michael & All Angels, Blackburn. One of eleven children born between 1896 and 1913. Son of James Lord Stancliffe and Elizabeth Jane Stancliffe (née Houldsworth) of Blackburn. At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as a warehouse boy in a cotton mill. Two of his brothers, also bellringers, Richard Houldsworth Stancliffe and Thomas (Tom) Stancliffe, served during WWI and survived, although Richard was invalided out and died in 1925. A memorial peal of Plain Bob Minor was rung to his and two other local ringers’ memory on 14/06/1919 at St Michael & All Angels, Blackburn, conducted by Arthur Tomlinson. On 25/09/1920, the St Michael & All Angels Parish War Memorial was unveiled, and a peal of Plain Bob Minor was rung, his brother Tom ringing the 5th to his first peal. Born: Blackburn. He was at school at the time of the 1911 census. He is remembered on the impressive war memorial at Rishton and on the Blackburn District War Memorial in Blackburn Cathedral ringing room. Born 11/11/1884. One of seven children; six surviving at the 1911 census. Son of John Gent of Glencoe House, Whittle-le-Woods and the late and Mary Gent (née Garstang, died 1915). Husband of Annie Gent (née Knowles) whom he married on 14/04/1909 at St John’s Whittle-le-Woods, of Lytham View, Whittle-le-Woods. Father of Bessie Gent (born 03/11/1914) He rang his first peal, ringing the tenor and conducting Plain Bob Major at Whittle-le-Woods on 01/02/1913. He rang in and conducted a peal of Plain Bob Major at Chorley (RC) Church on 27/09/1913, the footnote to the peal reported that the “go of them is anything but good”. He rang a peal at Chorley Parish Church, also Plain Bob Major, on 27/09/1913. He worked as a blacksmith for Mr B. Harrison in Chorley before enlisting. On Armistice day, 11/11/1918, his 34th birthday, he wrote to his father and sisters “did ever anyone have a more blessed birthday gift … no more dodging bombs and shrapnel, and machine gun fire”. He had written to his family describing life in the trenches and had ‘seen some pitiful sights’ in Verdun, Lens, Bethune, La Bassée, Vimy and Lille. After three years of active service in France he was given leave of a few days, after walking from Wigan railway station to Chorley in cold, wet and windy November weather he succumbed to influenza and pneumonia and died within days of reaching home. A memorial peal of Kent TB Major was rung to his memory on 21/04/1923 at Whittle-le-Woods, which was conducted by William Lancaster. Born: Chorley. Enlisted: Unknown.
