The Kathleen and May is the last remaining British built wooden hull three-masted top sail schooner. Built in 1900 and registered in Bideford, she has strong associations with Len's family dating back to the time that his great-grandfather served aboard as First Mate and named his daughter (Len's grandmother) Kathleen May.

Also rung in special memory of Mark's Great Uncle Albert who lost his life in that war, whose body was never found, and of Albert's sister Lillian, Mark's grandmother, who'd waved her beloved brother goodbye from Sutton Station shortly before she became a teenager and who never saw him again.

Rung to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Sergeant Thomas G Whitaker DCM, 19059 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards, who was killed in action on the 26th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme aged 21 years. He is “Remembered with Honour” on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing “After losing all contact”.
Sergeant T G Whitaker DCM was the uncle of Terence Halstead, still a regular ringer at St Mary's church and member of the LACR since 1951, and the great uncle of Philip J Halstead (4) also a St Mary's ringer.
We will remember them.
