A possible origin of the name Penarth is a combination of "pen" meaning head and "arth" meaning bear, hence "Head of the Bear" or "Bear's Head". This was the accepted translation for several hundred years and is still reflected in the town's insignia which depicts bears. "The Bear's Head" is also the local, regularly used by the Penarth ringers.
