Happy St Dunstan’s Day - the patron saint of bellringers.

If you’re ringing for St Dunstan’s Day, you can link your performance to an event here.

Read an article about St Dunstan on the US National Bell Festival website.

St Dunstan Doubles is an ancient method, listed in Campanalogia (1677). Nowadays we’d describe it as a variation of Grandsire which uses all three of Grandsire Bobs, Singles and Extremes.

Can you guess how many rings of bells Dove’s Guide lists in churches dedicated to Dunstan?

RW Subscriptions and recommended performance donation

The Ringing World Board would like to wish all BellBoard users a very happy Christmas and inform you that we are pleased to be able to hold Ringing World subscription rates at their current levels for another year.

As presented at the Ringing World AGM in September, donations in 2022 have returned to pre-pandemic levels and, along with the extra ringing activities around the Queen’s Jubilee and Funeral, we have made up some of the financial deficit from the two previous years. We hope that donations will continue at this level into 2023, also taking into account the likely increase in ringing activity surrounding the Coronation of King Charles III.

On the negative side we are already experiencing significant cost increases in everything we produce and this will have an impact on our bottom line. We have noticed that many bands are making performance donations of £1, and in order to continue to repair losses from the last two years £1 will become the recommended donation on BellBoard from the start of 2023.

We are pleased to invite entries for the 2022 Ringing World National Youth Contest, being held in Exeter on 2nd July. There will be two contests, one for method ringing and the other for call changes, and teams may choose to ring on either 6 or 8 bells. The competition towers will be St Mark’s and St David’s, and the chief judge is Chris Poole.

Click here for the entry form.

With great regret the Organising Committee has decided to postpone the Open Towers Day planned for 3rd January due to the worsening Covid situation.
Gift Aid Awareness Day

Thursday 7th October is Gift Aid Awareness Day. The Ringing World is very grateful to all our donors, many of whom have filled in a Gift Aid declaration form. This allows us to reclaim 25p of tax from the UK government for every £1.00 you donate, which amounts to several thousands pounds a year. If you’re a UK taxpayer then please take a few seconds to fill in the declaration and allow us to claim Gift Aid on your donations.

Filling out the Gift Aid declaration form is easy. Just log in to BellBoard and go to this page, or through your Account screen.

Thank you!

BellBoard Developments

We are pleased to announce that BellBoard now lists the contents of each issue of The Ringing World. This new facility will make it easier for subscribers to find articles and for existing readers to point potential readers/subscribers towards articles of interest.

From the BellBoard front page look out for ‘View the contents of this issue’ under the front cover image, and on the ‘Issues’ page, issues with contents have a small ’i’ icon next to their issue date. A list of articles is displayed with links to individual RW pages – subscribers can view the page with just one click, and non-subscribers will be invited to purchase a pdf copy of the issue.

At first only new issues will have their contents listed, but we will work to extend the archive backwards as well as develop search facilities. If you are interested in helping with this – or indeed any other aspects of BellBoard development or data – please get in touch with the Editor.

Developing BellBoard is made possible by the donations we receive from our subscribers and supporters and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your ongoing support. Through your generosity we are able to improve this valuable resource.

Footnotes added to CSV download

We frequently receive feedback that users would like footnote data
included in the CSV files available for download. We have been reluctant
to change this as we know many users have set up automated scripts to
download records, and changing the format would disturb them.

We have now implemented a new version of the download on a
slightly different URL, which includes footnotes (in the final field
before band details) and header information. Note also that where more
than one bell is rung by a single ringer (e.g. in handbell performances),
the relevant bells cell will now start with a tab character. This will
force spreadsheet software to interpret the cell as text and prevent it
from trying to format it as a date or number.

If you download a CSV file from the browser you will receive a file
in the new version, while automated scripts will continue to receive the
old format. If you wish to change, the old query ends &fmt=csv and
the new ends &fmt=csv_header

A reminder, if you are downloading the results of a large search from
the browser, that you can append ‘&pagesize=1000’ or some suitable
number to increase the records shown.

As announced in The Ringing World on 12th February, BellBoard performances can now be flagged as having used simulated sound or containing non-human ringers. You can hide either type on the browse screen, or set it as a preference in your Account screen.

Submitted performances rung in Ringing Room, Handbell Stadium etc will be automatically flagged with the ’simulated sound’ flag. If you have rung with Abel or Wheatley controlling one or more bells, please add the ’automated’ flag from the performance view screen.
