In memoriam — Tim Younger

Tim Younger, who has died after a short illness aged 60, was a ringer at St Mary’s, Hemel Hempstead for over 45 years. Tim was born in Aylesbury in 1963 moving to Hemel Hempstead in 1969. He joined the choir of St Mary’s rising to head choirboy. He joined the Hemel ringers in 1977 and the Hertfordshire County Association in 1978. Tim was an accomplished ringer. He rang 87 peals, between 1979 and 2012. These ranged from multi method doubles to Yorkshire Surprise Royal. He did not quite manage to ring the surprise major alphabet only getting to 25, missing the letter J. Tim rang in the St Mary’s Hemel Hempstead striking competition band for the Kimpton Cup for over 30 years. In all he was in the winning band eight times, in the band that came second four times and third four times. The Hemel ringers’ outing was a high point of Tim’s year and he always contributed to everyone else’s enjoyment of the day. Tim qualified as a Chartered Accountant and worked for many years for the Financial Conduct Authority. In 2018 he moved to Dubai to work for the Dubai Financial Services Authority which necessarily curtailed his ringing although he did participate from Dubai in Ringing Room during lockdown. On trips back to the UK Tim always tried to arrange his flights so that he could ring for practice and Sunday service at Hemel. Tim completed his work in Dubai at the end of 2023 and returned with his wife Helen to the UK in February 2024. He was very much looking forward to taking up active ringing again but sadly it was to not be. Shortly after his return to the UK he was diagnosed with aggressive pancreatic cancer and died 10 days later. Tim will be much missed by his wife Helen, father Alan, brother Mark (Ringing Master at All Saints Fulham), sister Louisa and all the wider family. He will also be missed by the ringers in Hemel, Hertfordshire and beyond, many of whom attended his funeral. Several quarter peals were also rung in his memory.
