He survived the war to become Bishop of Rochester and the founding Master of St Peter’s College Oxford. His younger twin Noel trained in Oxford and Liverpool as an orthopaedic surgeon and served with the RAMC. He won the Military Cross and was the only person to have been awarded the Victoria Cross twice during the Great War. Both twins had represented their country in the 1908 Olympic Games. The third brother Bernard also served as a military surgeon in the War and was awarded the Military Cross. He went on to become a leading ophthalmologist after the war. Aidan’s plans to train for the priesthood were interrupted by the outbreak of war. Considered by his superiors to be the bravest man in his brigade but was lost after an attack on Sanctuary Wood in July 1917. Aidan’s body was never found despite Bernard having gone three times into no man’s land to try to find him. He is remembered on the Menin Gate. A month later Noel was awarded his second VC for his bravery in recovering and treating wounded colleagues even when wounded himself. He succumbed to his wounds on August 4th 1917.Given the impact of the two surviving brothers we can only imagine the potential contributions of the brothers who were lost to the madness of war.
