The text of the report, which also adds a report of a peal of Kent rung on 3rd January, gives the following before the essential details: 'The town of Staley Bridge was[s] greatly enlivened on Saturday, the 1st of January, by the ringing of the bells of the church newly erected, situated at that part of the town called Castle Hall, near the Holy Trinity Church, this being the first peal of bells ever introduced into the town, although containing upwards of 30,000 inhabitants, which caused great attraction and merriment. The St Michael's ringers, of Ashton-under-Lyne, ascended the tower, and succeeded in ringing in most excellent style Mr. John Holt's celebrated peal of grandsire trebles, comprising 5,040 changes, which was most ably conducted by Mr. James Ogden, and was finally brought round in two hours and forty-nine minutes by the following persons:- .....'Following the names of the ringers the report has: 'After the peal, the ringers assembled at the house of Mr. Elijah Broadbent, Commercial Inn, and were regaled with the good old English fare of roast beef and plum pudding, provided by the worthy host and hostess. The bells are a fine peal of eight, and were cast by Messrs Mears, of Whitechapel, London, and do them great credit.
