Durham & Newcastle Diocesan Association — Barney Friends Quarter Peal weekend

5th – 6th January 2019

David Kirkcaldy and Kathy Howard, from Steyning, West Sussex, travelled north to join friends old and new, some of whom they last saw back in the heat of the summer when Darren Moore married Sharon Devlin in Barnard Castle. Ever since the wedding in July, there had been discussions about organising a few towers in North Yorkshire that David hadn’t yet rung at and Helen was ’persuaded’ to make the appropriate arrangements! The date was set and towers contacted, then catastrophe struck for Kathy when she fell and broke a bone in her wrist before Christmas, almost certainly curtailing her hopes of any ringing. The weekend plans went ahead with replacements for Kathy found in the form of Chris Mansfield and Ashley Law for which we are very grateful. Kathy’s arm was supported in a splint so it couldn’t be used, but this did not prevent her having a go at rounds in most towers, ringing one-handed very skilfully, with David standing by for assistance if needed. Seven quarter peals were rung over the weekend of 5th /6th January 2019 and several people their rang first quarters in methods. Conducting was shared between five of the nine ringers involved and one quarter was rung with a bell without a stay. Many thanks to all the people who arranged for us to be met at the towers or to make arrangements for us to find the keys. Everything went to plan. We had a very nice lunch in the rustic Cover Bridge Inn near East Witton on Saturday. Most of us met in Barney for a meal at the Vivo restaurant in Newgate after beverages in The Old Well. This gave Sharon a chance to join us. Thank you to the drivers who navigated the scenic routes across the moors between towers- how could this experience be missed?! After the final quarter at Richmond, discussion was heard in the pub about future events involving local three and four bell towers, towers further north and in West Sussex, so I believe this is the start of a great ringing friendship group. We obviously forgot how sore our hands and arms were once it was all over and all agreed that it had been a fun start to the ringing year. Thank you to everyone involved.
