Guildford Diocesan Guild — Guildford District Quarter Peal Weekend20th – 21st October 2018
The annual Guildford District quarter peal weekend took place on 20th and 21st October, with an excellent success rate of 13 out of the 14 quarters attempted, as detailed below. Methods ranged from Bob Doubles to Anglia Surprise Royal and Yorkshire Maximus. The only loss was of 8 Spliced Surprise Major at Shere. A total of 39 District members took part, plus five from outside the District. There was one first quarter peal, Sue Henderson, a member of the relatively new band at Ewhurst, and several other firsts. A particular feature this year was the presence of “Tommy”, a Perspex model of a WWI soldier, who represents the ringers of the former Winchester Diocesan Guild who fell in WWI, at the four towers who lost ringers in the war – Dunsfold, Godalming, Guildford (Holy Trinity) and Witley. At that time the western half of Surrey was in the Winchester Diocese. In the run-up to the Armistice Tommy will be present at ringing in towers throughout the former diocese from which the fallen ringers came.
