Lundy Island Society — A week on Lundy10th – 17th June 2017
So, the bells of St Helena’s church are currently not available for any ringing. The church is completely surrounded in scaffolding and urgent building work is in full flow. Whilst this is disappointing for ringers visiting the island, the situation is essential to preserve the future of the church and use of the bells. So, when this group of ringers signed up for a week on the island without any knowledge of this, it was bound to be a small disappointment. Luckily, Lundy Island is a beautiful place to be, even without any ringing. However, a plan was hatched to take some ringing bells over to the island, and this is exactly what happened. Graham Wright was approached and very kindly gave permission for The Bishopstoke Campanile mini ring to be taken across the Bristol Channel. Permission was also sought from the ferry operator who gave special care and attention to the safe transportation across the water. The Lundy Island authorities gave the project much consideration and allowed the mini ring to be set up in the Beach House near the landing jetty. And so, there was a (temporary) ring of bells on the island for the week. Most of the ringers in the group had a ring on them, and some ventured into a few peals and QPs. Four peals and two quarters were scored during the week. Huge thanks go to everyone involved to make this a success. It was certainly interesting, challenging and different.
