Vernet and Sabarat with Steve

21st – 26th September 2023

What better way to spend a long weekend in September than to visit Vernet-les-Bains. The party assembled on Thursday having travelled from the UK via car, train or plane. The only hiccup on the outbound journeys being a notable lack of oil in one hire car. The ringing started on Friday when, we believe, the most changes in a day on the bells were rung - two peals, a quarter peal and seven leads of Surprise Royal. The first peal is believed to be the first, on the bells, by an all male band! We restricted ourselves to a peal and a quarter peal on both Saturday and Sunday although we did assist with the Saturday practice and Sunday service ringing. On Monday seven intrepid ringers, in two cars, made the three hour journey to Sabarat for an unsuccessful peal attempt. We did manage a quarter peal and a very pleasant lunch. The remaining members of the party had a leisurely day’s sightseeing, those who caught the ’Petit Train Jaune’ returned looking a lot like lobsters! A big thank you to our organiser, Steve, and to our hosts - Jeff Ladd at Vernet and Amanda Richmond at Sabarat
