200th Anniversary of the invention of Ellacombe Chimes

The vicar of St Mary’s church in Bitton in Gloucestershire devised a mechanism so that one person could ring the church bells and do this from the vestry without the need to ascend the church tower. Since then, hundreds of churches throughout the world have installed the ‘Ellacombe Chimes’, named after their inventor H.T. Ellacombe. The Ellacombe tune is also a popular hymn.
