Carlisle Diocesan Guild — Cumbrian Codgers - Blackburn

Thursday, 11 July 2019

We are off to Blackburn this month. It’s a bit of a longer trek than normal, but it will be well worth it, as we are ringing at all three towers. As it happens, it’s the day after the Durham & Newcastle’s MWG ("Codgers") summer outing to Cumbria, so if anyone fancies a stay over and a ring on some rather nice bells down south.....!

Many thanks to Jean Barnes who very kindly arranged all the towers for us, for which I am eternally grateful. Thanks Jean!

11:00 - 12:00 Blackburn Cathedral, 10 bells, 25-1-14 in D. BB1 5AS SD 684280

12:30 - 1:30 Blackburn St Silas, 8 bells, 17-2-14 in F. BB2 6PS SD 667285

Lunch is at Old Mother Redcap, (BB1 3LS) which is just out of Blackburn (Knuzden) on the Accrington Road. Please let me know by end of next Tuesday if you intend to take lunch as they need to know numbers, but not menu choices.

3:30 - 4:30 Blackburn St Jude, 8 bells, 6-0-23 in Db. BB1 3JL SD 700281

Parking (thanks to Jean for this info which I quote):

Parking for the Cathedral is no fun: there are a few spaces in the Dean’s yard, accessed from Darwen Street then Dandy Walk, just past the Cathedral before the Postal Order (pub). Street parking is maximum of 1 hour except on Clayton Street (2 hours). There is a large Pay and Display car park on Mincing Lane (parallel to Darwen Street). Perhaps the best bet is Morrison’s Supermarket - 2 hours free and no purchase necessary but a little awkward to get to if you’re already in Darwen Street. Added to which, the streets change one way or another almost on a weekly basis - even I have trouble and I live here! But don’t let that put you off: BBC bells are among the best

At St Silas you can park in the churchyard or on the road, and at St Jude’s on Didsbury Street at the side of the church

Special methods: Erin caters and triples, single Oxford bob triples.

Hope to see a good turnout for what promises to be an unusual and enjoyable day out.
