Antient Free and Accepted Masons (Clavis Lodge) — Clavis Lodge abroad

2 – 8 April 2019

Over 50 years ago a song was released about trains and boats and planes. If you add cars to the list, that’s how 18 members of Clavis Lodge, accompanied by 9 wives and partners, arrived in Ypres, for the start of a ringing tour that ended in Dordrecht. We rang two peals and a quarter peal in Ypres, as well as helping the local band there with a specially arranged extra practice on the Wednesday. Thank you very much to Liz Millward and her band for making us so welcome. Later the same evening, we paid our respects to the fallen by ringing handbells at the Menin Gate, immediately after they had played Last Post. This was greatly appreciated by all who stayed to listen.

Unfortunately 5 had to return home after Ypres, and the quick dash to Dordrecht for the remaining 22 resulted in two peals and four quarter peals. The visit to the Grote Kerk next to ‘t Klockhuys and a tour by Paul de Kok were very interesting, with work progressing steadily in the tower for the new peal of 10. The legendary hospitality of Paul and his family was greatly appreciated, and we were sorry to leave.
