All these principles have the following properties:
- Each row occurs the same number of times at hand and back in the plain course.
- No consecutive identical place notations (e.g. no xx or 14.14).
- No changes repeated during a section.
- A plain course is a true block of 96 changes (1-6) or a true block of 48 changes (7-21).

In addition:
- The “Special” Principles 8-15 have each of the four regular place notations (x,12,14,34) occurring 3 times in a section.
- Principles 1-6 and 16-21 are symmetrical
