First World War Commemoration. In memory of Lance Corporal Herbert Edward White, a ringer at this church, who died 11th October 1918, age 41. Military Police Corps Military Foot Police. Service No.P/4571. Commemorated at Deptford (Brockley) Cemetery, England, Grave A 18. Born 4th quarter 1876 and baptised 28/01/1877 at St Mary’s, Lewisham. One of seven children; six surviving at the 1911 census. Son of Ellen White (née Hemmings) of 16 Bolden Street, St John’s, London, and the late Clement White (died early 1918). At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as an insurance agent, following in the footsteps of his father. He rang his first peal on 31/12/1907, ringing the 4th to Grandsire Triples at St John’s, Deptford, conducted by William J. Jeffries. He rang further peals at Deptford on 31/12/1908, 31/12/1909, 19/02/1910 and 20/05/1910; he rang the 4th to all of the peals, which were all conducted by William J. Jeffries. He rang quarter peals of Grandsire Triples at Deptford on 03/06/1916 and 01/01/1918. Born: Lewisham. Enlisted: Deptford. Resided: Deptford.
