This peal was also widely reported in local newspapers and the following extract, kindly provided by John Eisel, from the Shrewsbury Chronicle of 8/4/1808, is typical: THE COLLEGE YOUTHS and the CUMBERLAND YOUTHS have long been celebrated for their skill in Campanology. The following will prove that the SHREWSBURY UNION SOCIETY is not behind either of them, in skill or perseverance. —Tuesday last being the Ringers’ Quarterly Meeting, a set of them assembled at St. Chad’s Belfry, and at 10 o’clock commenced a peal of Grandsire Caters consisting of 10,097 Changes, which they completed in high stile [sic] in 6 hours and 50 minutes, being the longest peal ever rung in this county. 1 person likes this
