Commemorated at Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, Panel 1. One of seven children; six surviving at the 1911 census. Son of the late James Clayton and the late Sarah Jane Clayton of Hoghton, Lancs. At the time of the 1911 census, he was working in the local cotton mill as an overlooker. Born: Hoghton, Lancs. Enlisted: Blackburn. Resided (1911 Census): Riley Green, Hoghton, and it is believed he later moved to Hadleigh, Suffolk.
