Rung in memory of 32524 Driver Frederick Charles Bowyer, Royal Engineer attached to 1st King George V's Own Sappers and Miners, who died on November 29th 1917 in Samarra, Mesopotamia aged 32 years. He was born in Stansted in 1885 the seventh of the nine children of George and Ann Bowyer. Prior to enlisting he had married Ada Ellen Lee in Minchinhampton in 1908 and worked as a caretaker. Enlisted in 1914, posted to France 19th April 1915 but by 1917 he was part of the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force. He died of pneumonia following the successful rout of the Turkish forces from Tikrit on 5-6 November 1917 and now lies in the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. He was the great-great uncle of the treble ringer.
Remembering also with pride G/11186 Pte Ernest John Burnett, 1st Bn Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Rgmt, born in Stansted 1881, killed in action 22nd July 1916 and G/1558 Pte Benjamin Ralph Streatfield, 7th Bn Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Rgmt born in Stansted February 18th 1894 and killed in action July 1st 1916. Both men are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and were cousins of the treble ringer.
All three are commemorated on the Stansted War Memorial.
