Rung in memory of Private Ernest Ridgewell, Earls Colne, Essex. Died 21/10/1917 age 39. Royal Fusiliers 11th Bn. Service No.51769. Commemorated at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium, Grave XII I 24. Born 1st quarter 1877. One of eight children. Son of Walter Ridgewell and Elizabeth Ridgewell (née Boreham). He worked as a labourer in an iron foundry before enlisting. He learnt to ring at Greenstead Green but did most of his ringing at Earls Colne. He rang a number of peals at Earls Colne, Greenstead Green and Colne Engaine, conducting many of them. He was badly wounded in the abdomen and leg on 19/10/1917 and died two days later at the Casualty Clearing Station at Dozinghem. His brother, Private Bertie Ridgewell, Essex Regiment, not known to be a bellringer, also fell, on 09/07/1916, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Born: Great Maplestead, Essex.
