Specially arranged and rung to the memory of Private Harry Saunders, known as ‘Bertie’, service no. 24508. Essex Regiment, 9th Battalion. Died of wounds 18th July 1917 Aged 23. He was a ringer at this tower and lived at Alma Square, Mistley. His occupation was the same as his father, a Fisherman. His Medal Index Card shows that he was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Harry has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Bay 7.
