Rung to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln Fair which took place in the City at Lincoln Castle on 20th May 1217 during the First Barons’ War, between the forces of the future Louis VIII of France and those of King Henry III of England. The battle (a major landmark in English history) was the turning point in the First Barons’ War and led to Prince Louis returning to France for good having signed the Treaty of Lambeth in September 1217!
Remembering the formidable lady constable Nicholaa de la Haye Castellan of Lincoln Castle. She directed the defence of Lincoln against the rebel Barons & Louis’ French forces in 1217 during the Battle of Lincoln Fair and made sure the Castle did not fall, holding out until Royalist William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke arrived with reinforcements.
(Rung also for the Lincoln Diocesan Guild)
