Specially arranged and rung to the memory of Private John Poole, 4th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) who was drowned whilst on Active Service on 4th May 1917, aged 33 years. John was on the troopship Transylvania bound for Salonika when she was torpedoed as she crossed the Gulf of Genoa. 414 lives were lost. John’s body was never recovered and is commemorated along with 274 other men who have no known grave at the Savona Memorial, Italy. Born 1883, son on John and Esther Poole of St John’s Green Writtle. One of fourteen children he worked as a farm labourer before enlisting in Chelmsford. John Poole rang three peals for the Essex Association. His name liveth for evermore.
