First peal on the bells by an all-ladies band, rung to mark the centenary of when 250 women and 20 boys went on strike in 1915, for fairer pay and improved labour conditions at Ainsworth Mill (later Kangol) In Cleator. They were contributing to the war effort whilst the men were away, by making khaki coloured thread for the soldier's uniforms. They were paid 35-45p per week for 60 hours work.
After 6 weeks, the company conceded their demands and also awarded a 10% War Bonus. Full recognition of the union was also obtained.
